Search Engine Optimization, or SEO can be extremely complicated, and difficult to master. There are a number of factors that determine where your site falls in search results, and getting all of those factors to line up can be challenging. There are some common mistakes that a lot of people make when starting out with SEO that you should avoid at all cost.

A lot of people fill their content with strong keywords, but neglect to do the same for the title to their article. Your title should reflect the content in the article, and contain as many keywords as possible that are directly related to the content.

Don’t use keywords in excess. Each of your articles should feel unique, and natural, while still managing to incorporate as many keywords as possible. If you try to cram as many keywords as possible into an article, search engines may actually lower your page’s search placement. Search engines consider this practice to be a sign that a site may be trying to spam search engines, and as a result, this practice can have a negative impact on your search placement.

A picture is worth a thousand words, but search engines can’t read pictures. If all of the text on your site is in image form, search engines can’t access it properly. Sure, you can generate some image search traffic by naming the images correctly, and using alt tags to describe them, but that’s just not the same as getting the full benefit of all of your text being indexed by the search engine.

Don’t stop updating your site. If you begin to slack off when it comes to maintenance, your search rank will begin to decline. Keep adding content as often as possible, and make sure to do periodic keyword research to see if there are any new terms you should be trying to capitalize on.

SEO can be tricky, but if you avoid some of the more common mistakes, you’ll be off to a good start. Keep your site up to date, and make sure your titles reflect your content and your keywords. Keep your site up to date, and stay on top of your keyword research, and you will be on your way to SEO success.
